Garden Trends We Love: Edible Gardens

There is a growing DIY trend that is revolutionizing many industries – people are trying their hand at things we used to just simply buy. Food is no exception to this growing trend. There was a time when people had no choice but to grow their own fruits and vegetables, but there are an increasing number of people who believe we had it right the first time around. We want to know what’s in our food and the best way to know is to grow it yourself, or “GIY.” We see it in the form of backyard gardens, community gardens and even container gardens. In fact, it’s become so common that it’s rivaling flower gardening in popularity.

So what are people growing? Popular homegrown foods are tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, peppers, radishes and lettuce. Then there are super foods like kale, Swiss chard, garlic, onions, sweet potatoes and squash. You can also have your own “medicinal garden” and grow healing herbs such as chamomile, rosemary, oregano, mint and fennel. And let’s not forget about “drinkable gardens” with fruits like blueberries and raspberries, which are perfect for smoothies and homemade cocktails.

There are many great benefits to growing your own fruits and vegetables. Since it’s right at your door, you can pick them at their prime and enjoy fresher, better tasting, higher quality food. You’re also more inclined to eat better when it’s literally at your door – Healthy eating just becomes part of your lifestyle.

Don’t have a backyard? Consider growing vegetables, herbs and fruits in containers. Containers do have a couple of advantages over standard in-the-ground gardening. For one, containers provide a longer growing season since the soil stays a few degrees warmer in the spring and fall. Growing above ground also helps protect crops that are susceptible to soil-borne disease.

There are some great companies offering plants for the home garden. Fall Creek Farms & Nursery are breaking grounds with their BrazelBerries TM Collection of edible ornamental berry plants that are delicious and make for beautiful shrubs. Look out for names like Raspberry Shortcake, Peach Sorbet and Jelly Bean as we offer BrazelBerries TM for our container gardens this summer.

Herbs and berries will also be part of Terrassa’s Garden to Table Collection. “Snip & Eat” centerpieces will be available in two herb container gardens for the summer season to satisfy both a savory and sweet palette.
